I will be giving this a crack as a potential jump point into checking on my local home network, where I don't require anything other than a browser and an ssh client (and knowledge of the necessary command line invocation).

Cool, let me know how it goes. Note that private networks are blocked by default, so you need to add your home subnet in settings -> Allowed networks. And better enable TLS for the proxy and HTTPS for the admin panel if it's open to the internet.
