Did you actually read the article? It doesn't discuss economics at all. It's about the supposed existential threat and fearmongering in those regards.
I did read the article, frontier labs have been fearmongering to gain government regulations on open source open weights models to justify their trillion dollar valuations

The doomer philosophy has been there since the inception. OpenAI was created from the fear of Google gaining a monopoly over superintelligence. Could've been just a recruiting strategy from Sam Altman's perspective, but maybe not so much from the people who got recruited. Dario has been around the Effective Altruism circles from way before Anthropic, and the company as a whole has always been about that line of thinking.
I don't buy this whole grand conspiracy angle.
Anthropic wants to get hype for their IPO so they can avoid bankruptcy and prevent US companies from switching to open models. A lot of their employees genuinely believe in the EA/xrisk shit and work there out of conviction. Bernie wanted to jump on the anti AI train because it's popular in some leftist circles and he's not very tech literate so he ended up supporting a stupid proposal.
These are mostly independent things. Of course there's a lot of influence from the lesswrong crowd that worked hard to put their ideas into the mainstream. But you can't say it's some global push to take away peoples rights, just a bunch of rich antisocial nerds taking advantage of a misinformed public to get even richer or push their personal pseudo-religious beliefs.
The post author is a right wing conspiracy theorist and it shows with all the covid and Ukraine references.
