Why is men being hopeful presented as strange?

The author could have written:

“I encountered a predominantly male crowd that was unusually enthusiastic about Bitcoin.”

But instead the journalist made a psychological diagnosis. “lost boy,” “hope,” “emotional tether,” etc.
