The press release includes an image of a person brushing and looking at an image of their teeth on a phone. If you are actively brushing with toothpaste, the quality of the image will likely be as good as an unprepped colonoscopy.

It’s unlikely to yield any actionable information, other than scratching the pimple-popping gross-up itch.

On second thought, I am now half-expecting a home colonics device from Dyson. Easy setup… just lay down on your side in your bathtub.

Toothbrushes are a crappy device. I’ve seen some stuff lately that’s like a whole mouth brush, like a mouth guard. With a small pipe to the mouth guard feeding water, you can pretty much car wash your mouth every morning in 60 seconds. Sloshing water around in your mouth often creates way more pressure allowing water to go through the gaps in your teeth (cleaning them). But the waterpik sellers will convince you that isn’t true.

That’s the problem with highly skillful people that follow tradition. I’m sure the engineers are brilliant behind this (camera toothbrush designers), but they are still following tradition of this old idea.

Anyways. Sometimes you have to trust that you are well beyond tradition and are free to redefine all rules. Be fearless.

Sometimes I’ll add mouthwash or hydrogen-peroxide to the tank, it works well. Usually I start with a quick rinse, then a brush with the flosser on, then a finishing brush with the flosser off.

I see this and am unsure if it’s over-engineering a less effective solution. It’s neat, but I can’t say it excites me; am curious to see reviews and comparisons. The form factor does seem a bit odd though, visually it’s mediocre imo.

I truly don’t understand why would I need a camera in my toothbrush. I go to the dentist twice a year to get my teeth checked up for their health and also to get cleaned up and it’s covered from my health insurance.

I saw this on X and assumed it was well done satire of the current state of the industry.

I read all of that text. When I got to the part about their mouthwash (rinse) I found xylitol hyped as part of the disinfection regime. Xylitol was just tagged, again, in the literature as a source of cardiac issues and notes were that it was a common ingredient in chewing gum and mouthwash. The risks have been known for several years as documented here [0]. A recent article is this one [1]

After reading all of this I feel like Dyson should consider modifying the composition of their mouthwash to reduce the risk of users ingesting xylitol during or after this process. There are other synthetic sweeteners, each with its own set of problems but xylitol was commonly employed because it had antibacterial effects on bacteria that are known to cause gingivitis. Its use in chewing gum and in some foods probably caused most of the exposure events for people looking at healthier options for common items. Most people don't swallow mouthwash or toothpaste but there will always be some remaining in the mouth that is flushed into the system after brushing.

I checked their "Caveats and Sources" section at the end of the article. If you notice, there are 10 items in that list. When you read the article, there are only 8 tags linking to the Caveat list. Numbers 9 and 10, both related to MyDyson app (9) and claims associated with Dyson mouthwash and how the comparison was made (10) are not found in the text.

I find the whole device intriguing. Anything to simplify the tooth maintenance process and improve it works for me. I like that they attacked the tooth gap issue in an effort to minimize the need for mechanical flossing. I'm not sold on cameras on a toothbrush but if it works, I could be though I do not want a device like this to be connected to any other device that could have access to outside networks. It all needs to work in a self-contained system at point-of-use with data leakage, ever. Dyson doesn't need to learn to improve their devices by aggregating my teeth-brushing activity with that from millions (or thousands, or hundreds if it ever happens) of users. Pay people to participate. Use that data.

Thought I read elsewhere that if these get dirty they are essentially blowing dirty water into your gums, which can cause health problems
