That isn't what it did, HN replaces the posted URL with the canonical URL when it exists. Nine times out of ten the canonical URL points to the domain and not the actual page, for SEO purposes. But for some reason HN still does this, automatically, with no notice given to the poster.

Do you suppose this is more likely because NYC is covered in tens of thousands of CCTV cameras and ALPRs that Microsoft built for them post-9/11, or because the UWS is some kind of crime-free idyllic countryside like a village in the south of France?

The anti-Flock movement is packed with smooth-brain energy. Make no mistake, NYC is covered with cameras head to toe and a proving ground for the most advanced surveillance tech in existence.
