Hi HN. My cofounder and I have been building Coinage on nights and weekends for about a year, and it's live on the App Store today. The problem: money you’ll spend in the next 3–12 months doesn’t have a great home. Checking earns almost nothing. High-yield savings does a bit better, and investing in index funds can produce higher returns, but then you’re responsible for deciding when to sell before you spend.
Most people either leave too much cash sitting idle or manually manage that tradeoff.
This is where Coinage comes in.
Most people manually move money between checking, savings, and investments (or don’t bother at all). Coinage automates the decision of when to sell investments for everyday spending. We want to be the routing layer that keeps every dollar in the right place, earning, until the second you swipe. We're in the process of registering as an RIA to build toward that.
You connect your existing brokerage (Robinhood, Webull, Public, etc. through SnapTrade) and a card through Plaid, then set a sell rule once. Two modes right now. "Take the growth, keep the rest": you put in $100, set a threshold like +10%, and when it's worth $110 Coinage sells only the $10 of growth. Your $100 stays invested, and below $110 it just waits. "Nothing at a loss": it can sell your contribution too, which covers more spending, but it never sells below what you put in. If no rule triggers, nothing sells and you pay cash like normal. We never hold funds. You write every rule.
Coinage optimizes for keeping money invested, not avoiding taxes. We understand that every triggered sale is a taxable event because it realizes a gain. Wash sales are the more nuanced issue, especially with recurring purchases, which is why our default mode only sells gains. If the market is down when you need the money, nothing is sold and you simply spend cash.
Happy to answer anything about the rules engine, the brokerage plumbing, or the thinking behind it. We’re eagerly looking for users to test this idea for free via our app.
Hacker news is updating my URL to the wrong one. This is my actual website URL. https://coinage-app.com/

Couldn't be bothered to write your own description of your own business and used AI to write/edit it for you. Surely I'd trust you with direct access to my brokerage account.
