I agree with you that you can learn a language better by getting exposed to it. But you need to at least know the foundation of that language, like grammar or how to build a sentence in that language. But I think watching something along with subtitles is better than just blindly hearing it, at least you need to know the meaning of that sentence. For example, watching movies, shows or YouTube videos with subtitles in a languages you understand.
But that alone is not enough to fully understand that language. Because you will be a passive speaker, where you understand what they are talking about, but you can't answer or build the sentence on your own. For this, you would need to exercise your ability to build sentences, such as speaking in that language or writing something like a post, comment, or blog in that language.
That's just my opinion, as someone who learned 3 foreign languages.

When we were children, we could ask anyone what a word meant without hesitation. I think this is a big difference when learning a second language.
English is my second language, and when I watch a movie or read a book, I often struggle with words I don’t know.
