Although the idea is compelling to me, the evidence they present wasn't. I think the reason why is that it doesn't explain why all the other lifeforms in the same ecological niches didn't evolve the same level of cognitive functioning.

I also wondered if there's some social ancestor that's missing from the record? I imagine it would be difficult to know about the actual social behavior of extinct cephalopods.
