They never do, because what was said is offensive.

I would like to know in many cases to form my own opinion of whether it was sufficiently offensive to justify the reaction and consequences so I also find it really annoying.

You can deduce its some form of sexual jokes though, most likely innuendo. What we do not know is how bad it was.

People being sacked for this kind of behaviour is a regular occurrence now. How can someone that senior not be aware of their own actions and where they will lead.

Investigations are pretty much its own sport now in the UK. People are always getting investigated over "inappropriate" comments or behaviour, basically anything. I'm sure some people at HR love it.
