The scolding about not using certified guides or having commercial filming permits seems so alien to the climbing culture I’m familiar with. Is it a Yosemite climber thing? Is it like punk rock where they have a rebellious front, but there are actually a bunch of strict rules that must be followed?

Yeah all that counterculture stuff in climbing pretty much died 30-40 years ago. The sport is very regulated everywhere today, kind of like everything else in outdoor recreation.
