It seems like the woman may have incorrectly thought Employment Authorization Document and its expiry date is a valid visa to stay in the country, and may have confused the expiry dates between documents. A common situation that immigration attorneys often warn about.
It's very important to remember that this individual and many others like them are in the US 100% legally. They have not broken any laws. But US federal agents have rounded them up and put them in detention.

Are you sure she is in the US legally? It sounds like she may have been thinking her EAD document expiry date constitutes a legal right to stay in the country (confusing expiry dates and documents is pretty common in the byzantine US immigration system).
Especially on a spousal visa, so may not have the immigration attorneys constantly providing advice like an immigrant worker.

Even if true why are these people along with their children herded violently into prisons where they can be held for days/weeks/months with no recourse? Is accidentally staying too long such a terrible crime that prison and harsh sub-human treatment is the punishment? It is fucking embarrassing for the USA to be doing this.
It’s almost incalculable how much damage Trump has done to America's reputation across the world. Not just him though, his followers. All the Hollywood gloss in the world won’t shine this turd up.
