While dangerous a good craftsman understands the dangers and how to avoid them. I grew up in a family machine shop business and the main thing is to be aware of the moves you are making, where you are standing relative to the work, and ensure no loose clothing, jewelry or hair is flopping around. I've ran milling machines, lathes, presses, table and band saws and never had a serious injury.
