I feel a lot of us are starting to reject new tech that seeks to aggressively deepen our digital immersion.

VR/AR headsets are a super cool tech that I'd love to use but I don't dare buying, because it feels too isolating.

It's ironic I've been waiting for smart glasses with displays ever since I found them in books and films as a kid, but now I see them as artifacts signaling a dystopian future. That they are tied to Meta does not help.

Yes! I have a similar reaction.

I often think of Jack Vance’s “Eyes of the Overworld”. They hid the reality of a decaying world behind a fabulous facade.

Very easy to do when priced at $3500 and brazenly designed to deepen their own walled garden lock-in.

tfa floated a possible shift to "wearable AI devices" which isnt as blatantly aggressive. while it seems impossible for any of these to be as immersive, their number and ubiquity seems more insidiously intrusive to me

I tried them out and it mostly didn't grab me - heavy, uncomfortable and it's much easier to do your computing on a laptop than with 'spatial computing'. Some of the 360 video from mountain tops and the like was cool though.

in other news, interest in vintage cassette tapes continues to rise along side new vinyl record pressings and wired headphones

how out of touch does a company have to be to think that they can sell spatial disorientation and nausea as features

puke pro, now with chunks!

im disappointed bc despite cost/weight/comfort, i think this was impressive hardware with a clear use and the first step toward something amazing. on the other hand i think wearable ai is pretty lame at the moment. input connected to a web api. please share any examples to the contrary

let me also put my opinion in its place. i completely get it, ppl hate strapping things to their face. this was going to fail eventually like every other vr. im quite surprised if apple earnestly launched this with higher sales expectations
