Imec has done work on transistor based memory that removes the capacitor part of the memory cell which would shrink cell sizes. While they have working prototypes and have scaled the tech, it uses technology from LCD panel manufacturing iirc which means it would require work to integrate into fab workflow for memory.

In other news, us datahoarders and folks who have to purchase drives in bulk (large scale businesses like a university or company that has its own in house IT department) feel the prices the hardest.
