Interesting. I've used to link products professionally for years. I would be interested in what security threat they are examining.

Yes, and is it software, or hardware? TP-Link routers have been very easy to convert to OpenWrt in the past. That conversion solves software security issues. Hardware backdoors and such are more difficult.
