Sometimes I wonder if the US government purposely doesn't allocate a chunk of bandwidth to a medium range digital mesh network protocol specifically to prevent losing centralized control of communications. It was only through a backdoor (LoRa) that things like Meshtastic can exist. Imagine if a protocol could be designed for it instead of having to reuse one meant for IoT sensors, it'd be incredible.

One of those incredible things only an altruistic billionaire could give to the US/world at this point. Who knows, maybe something like Wifi HaLow can fill that gap

The goverment agrees with you. They may soon be adding rules to permit data and GPS, as well as a new set of frequencies in the lower end of VHF for slightly longer range. There is also talk of allowing 100 watts on those lower previous cordless phone frequencies in addition to the existing 50 watts for UHF GMRS channels. Curious to see how this pans out when the dust settles.
