This article really papers over the elephant in the room: Google Play store revenue. "Android makes zero profit" is an absurd notion; sure, if the government forced _the Android Open Source Project_ to be an entity of its own, they would have to figure out some drastic change in funding or die. But Google Play Services is so tightly integrated with the AOSP, and Google Play store is correspondingly tightly integrated with Play Services. If any antitrust litigation was actually carried out, the three of them would most likely go together.

I'd argue this is actually a pretty healthy split--Android makes plenty off app store profits, well enough to be self sustaining, and the search engine/advertisement died of Google really doesn't need to be so closely integrated for Android to continue to thrive.

If they split up Google it’ll be AT&T and Bell Labs all over again.
