All VW that to do was to keep the style, but they had to go for the cyberpunk-ish thing because "electric".

They could even have just modernized the style. That thing is… I mean, not accounting for taste, but IMO it is noticeably ugly. The microbus is sort of charmingly not-cool looking.
They needed to give it cheerful round headlights and not the angry cyberpunk unibrow.
