such is the nature of labor under capitalism. only softened (being a overly critical) by mid-20th century pro-worker labor and unionization movements.
Academia, with their career tracks, are part of the capitalist economy, hence sell labor in a very competitive market, the one and only "public" market.
they exploit people as much as any other corporate-run industry, when did schools turn into corporations?
in short, the mental health is the fuel burnt by the academic-mills, always awaiting the next generation of students (I wanted to say suckers) to line up behind a professor of their liking, forever awating the chance to sell the labor of their own students in the future
