Why Does My iPhone Keep Asking Me to Check in with My Ex?

Mine asked me to check in with a friend while I was standing right next to him.

We were leaving an event together, so it probably assumed we would be going our separate ways, which is exactly what check-in is for. As a guy, I’m never going to tell my other guys friends to text me when they get home so I know they’re safe.

I’ll be curious if I get a notification next time I see my mom, as she’s pretty much the only person I’ll send that text for.

Mine was asking me to check in with my sister for a while. This seemed to follow a prolonged period of me texting or calling her on the way home from work. The check-in reminders started after I stopped regularly contacting her at that time.

More recently those reminders have become less frequent and more generic i.e. check in with “someone”. Admittedly I’ve been using my travel time to catch up on messages and responding to people.

Not sure what the feature is intended to achieve (perhaps a hat-tip to better mental health through regular contact with friends/family?). I have no idea how/whether it can be turned off without blanket disabling Siri suggestions.
